As you gear up to take the plunge, it’s natural to have a few nervous butterflies batting around your stomach. Among the questions zipping through your mind, you may wonder, “What happens if you pass out while skydiving?” And also … “How to not pass out when skydiving?”

Understanding the factors that contribute to fainting while skydiving can help us to significantly decrease that slight possibility. Let’s dive into the science behind why people may pass out and share some tips on how to keep your cool (and your consciousness) while soaring the skies.

Shortly after landing from skydiving in Dayton a tandem instructor and student smile and pose for a photo

Why Do People Pass Out?

People pass out due to a reduction of blood flow to the brain. This can happen because of various triggers, such as a sudden drop in blood pressure, hyperventilation, or even an adrenaline surge. Passing out is our body’s special way of saying, “Hey, please calm down and take care of me!”

Please note that people may faint due to unforeseen medical issues unrelated to skydiving. It’s advisable to get the go-ahead from your doctor if you think you may fall into this category!

Can You Pass Out While Skydiving?

Short answer: Yep. Passing out while skydiving is a possibility. But so is passing out while running, standing in front of a crowd, riding a roller coaster, or literally just … sitting there! So, is it common to pass out skydiving? Nope. Fainting while skydiving is a rarity, but it can happen.

What Are The Most Common Causes of Passing Out Skydiving?

Dehydration.

Not drinking enough fluids before the jump can lead to dehydration, which can cause a lull in blood pressure and result in fainting.

Low blood sugar.

There is a common misconception among first-time jumpers that not eating is the way to go – wrong! Many people believe if they say no to food before their jump, they will avoid feeling nauseous, but this couldn’t be further from the truth, and skipping a meal on jump day may actually leave you feeling woozy.

Low blood sugar can lead to impaired coordination, feeling dizzy, and becoming weak. Combine these with a big ol’ surge of adrenaline and you’ve got yourself a not-so-fun-time ahead. The excitement surrounding skydiving expends energy quickly, and the effects of this will be felt tenfold if you haven’t eaten.

Anxiety.

If you weren’t feeling a bit nervous for your first jump, that would make us nervous! Nerves before an exciting adventure are totally normal, but for some, this reaction can be a bit overwhelming and lead to feeling light-headed or even fainting.

How Not To Pass Out When Skydiving

Stay nourished and hydrated.

It’s very important to stay satiated and hydrated on the day of your skydive. Think of it this way: Do you want to eat ten tacos and drink a margarita before you go hiking? Probably not. Contrarily, do you want to fast before a hike? Mmm, nope. Should you eat a moderate meal that you know will keep you satiated and is easy on the tummy? Bingo! This will help to keep your blood sugar in check.

Sleep.

Anxiety thrives when we have minimal rest. We know that those infamous pre-jump nerves will beg you to stay up all night, but try your best to get some shut eye! Your body and brain are about to undertake flinging themselves from an airplane miles in the sky, and need all the rest they can get! How fast are you falling when skydiving once you exit? Terminal velocity, baby! Which is about 120 mph.

Communicate.

Communication before the jump, during the plane ride, and when the parachute opens is encouraged! Tandem instructors are trained professionals with years of experience, hours of time spent in freefall, and hundreds or thousands of skydives! They’re our real-life superheroes, but even they can’t read minds. If you’re feeling apprehensive or have any questions at all – ASK AWAY. Your comfort and confidence in the jump is a top priority!

Can You Skydive If You Have Panic Attacks?

Absolutely! People who struggle with anxiety regularly skydive. In fact, many avid skydivers commonly joke that they skydive because it’s cheaper than therapy.

Is it hard to breathe when skydiving? Although breathing during a skydive can feel a bit different than it does here on the ground, we wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s hard – there’s no less air up there, it’s just a mental block some people have to overcome. So, can you breathe while skydiving? Absolutely. If you’re feeling nervous about how to take in all the oxygen up there, what should you do? Communicate! Your instructor was once in your exact shoes and can give you tips and tricks to conquer every part of the jump.

Embrace the thrill of skydiving with confidence – book today! Please don’t hesitate to connect with us if you have any questions or concerns.

When it comes to skydiving, weather is either your best friend or your biggest enemy. While the thrill of freefall calls us to the skies, it’s critical to remember that in the end, Mother Nature calls the shots!

The best time of day to skydive is anytime with blue skies and gentle winds. Can you skydive in the rain? Nope. Not even a gentle rain? Nah, not so much. Having a solid understanding of the best weather for skydiving not only keeps safety a top priority, but it also ramps up the fun. Let’s look at the best weather conditions for skydiving, the weather that prohibits skydiving, and the why behind both.

What Conditions Are Good For Skydiving?

Although we rave about beautiful, blue skies making awesome skydiving photos, the weather is more than just a backdrop. Ideal weather conditions are not just about the comfort of a jump; they’re essential for prioritizing safety. What goes into making the skies conducive for the perfect skydive?

Clear skies.

Wide, open skies (and sometimes the random big, fluffy cloud) are a skydiver’s dream. Not only does a clear sky allow for crystal, clear views, but it enhances visibility for the pilot and skydivers – which is a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirement. Cloudy conditions can obstruct visibility, making navigation back to the ground a bit tricky and potentially hazardous.

So, is cloudy weather good for skydiving? Only if the clouds are super separated! Thick, overcast layers are the bane of skydiver’s existence.

Calm winds.

Winds play a crucial role in skydiving. Light and moderate winds are ideal. Gusty, exceptionally turbulent, or unpredictable winds (in strength and direction) are all big no-nos when it comes to jumping. Calm wind conditions help to ensure a controlled descent under canopy. They also make spotting the exit point from the aircraft simpler due to less drift in freefall.

  • Wait … you don’t actually freefall straight down? Nope. The freefall portion of a skydive doesn’t feel like falling at all – it’s more like flying. The wind blows in all sorts of directions up top, and we’re thankful for the technology that allows us to realize these before a jump. When you skydive, it’s common to not exit directly over where you intend to land, as we calculate the exit point based on the wind speed and direction, which gives us an approximate of how much we’ll drift.

Moderate temperatures.

Skydiving is best when temperatures are in the Goldilocks range: nothin’ too hot and nothin’ too cold. However, when properly accounted for, skydivers tend to prefer the heat over the cold. How come? It’s already cold enough up there! This is one reason the majority of jumpers choose summer as their favorite season for skydiving.

A blonde female tandem student and her tandem instructor moments after he begins the deployment process.

What Conditions Are Bad For Skydiving?

Clouds.

Can you skydive through a cloud? It’s actually illegal to skydive through a cloud! As we’ve covered, clouds are only OK if they’re far apart.

Strong winds.

What is too windy for skydiving? Different skydivers have different wind limits. Wind limits depend on whether the skydiver is a licensed solo jumper – which includes tandem instructors – or a student who is learning to skydive solo. Licensed jumpers are allowed to set their own, personal wind limits, and they vary based on the person.

  • For example, someone with 100 skydives may feel comfortable jumping in 20mph winds if they’re consistent in strength and direction, while a person with 1,000 skydives may have a strict wind limit of 17mph. It’s a personal preference! The skydiving community is tight-knit, and we have each other’s backs – meaning, if we see someone with less experience about to do a full-send in windy conditions, we’ll ask them what’s up!

Extreme temperatures.

Skydiving in extremely cold or hot temperatures can be dangerous. Dehydration, heat exhaustion, general physical discomfort, and bumpy thermals from the hot weather are all potential dangers.

While many of these can be mitigated by properly hydrating, eating, resting, and dressing, thermal activity is sort of out of our control. Thermals are the rising columns of air that are caused by uneven heating of the earth. This is because different objects (trees, grass, runways, hangars, cars, etc.) heat differently. Thermals can cause our parachutes to fly a bit wonky – making them rise or sink when we don’t want them to.

Extreme cold can cause some issues, too. On average, the temperature decreases by 3.5 degrees Fahrenheit for every 1,000 feet gained. For example, if the temperature is 50 degrees Fahrenheit on the ground, jumping from 13,000 feet puts you at almost 0 degrees Fahrenheit up there!

Skydivers in really chilly conditions are at risk of limited dexterity or even hypothermia. This means that we would hypothetically stay grounded in dangerously chilly temps. But, we don’t see that kind of cold weather in sunny California.

Best Time Of The Year To Skydive

Is it better to skydive in the summer or winter? Either/or! While avid skydivers fantasize about summertime skydives, when the dropzone is busy and vibes are immaculate, there’s something special and more subdued about autumn and winter jumps, too. Honestly? It’s up to you!

Skydiving is a relatively customizable sport – from the way we fly our tandem parachutes to combat motion sickness to choosing which views suit your fancy. If you prefer fiery orange and red foliage, jump in the fall! Don’t mind the cold? Winter jumping is for you. Want to zoom in for landing across some gorgeously, dewy grass? Jump in the morning!

Advanced Weather Tips

Have a few jumps under your belt? Learning to get your solo skydiving license and need all the knowledge you can get? For those looking to dive deeper into weather-related nuances, check out our YouTube video on advanced weather tips for experienced jumpers.

What About Weather Cancellations?

Any day we get to skydive is a good day. And any day we don’t get to skydive only builds anticipation for the next jumpable day! Skydivers adamantly wait out unfavorable weather – feel free to hang out with us and wait it out with our fingers crossed. If things aren’t looking up, we will gladly reschedule your skydive.

Let’s Jump!

Skydiving is more than just an adrenaline-pumping sport; it’s a powerful way to build unbreakable bonds and discover a new community that will always have your back!

At Start Skydiving, our mission is not only to provide a safety-conscious and thrilling skydiving experience but also to foster a vibrant, inclusive community where everyone from all walks of life feel a sense of belonging.

Let’s explore how to bring people who skydive together, create lifelong connections, and nurture personal growth through shared experiences, special events, traditions, and mentorship.

The Skydiving Community

The skydiving community is a unique and diverse group of individuals united by their passion for adventure and jumping out of airplanes, of course. It is a tight-knit network that stretches across the globe, where each person supports others, celebrates achievements and shares the highs and lows of the sport of skydiving.

This community offers numerous benefits, including emotional support, shared knowledge, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Whether it’s the thrill of a first jump or the celebration of a milestone jump with a pie in the face, these shared experiences create strong bonds and often breed friendships that last a lifetime! Skydivers frequently form friendships that extend beyond the dropzone, providing a support system that enhances the overall experience of the sport – it becomes a way of living for most.

Many have found their spouses, best friends, and family within our sport. Being part of a supportive community helps individuals navigate skydiving challenges, offering encouragement and advice from those who have been there before. We all work together to support a common goal: get better and be as safe as possible!

Building Community

One of the most compelling aspects of skydiving is the profound, life-changing experiences that forge connections that last a lifetime. The joy of achieving a personal best, overcoming a fear, or completing a challenging jump is made even more special when shared with others who understand the journey.

Skydiving Events

Skydiving events – called skydiving boogies – offer a fun and unique way for skydivers to come together and celebrate the freedom of flight and the skydiving lifestyle. At these events, we celebrate our achievements, share stories, make new connections within the sport, enjoy the camaraderie of fellow jumpers, and make new memories to be talked about for years to come! Boogies include jumping, partying, and various “festival-style” themed activities for the community to enjoy.

Other skydiving events include training camps, scrambles, and even competitions – where skydivers come together to show off their skills and learn something new! There are plenty of training programs and mentorships available for new skydivers or anyone navigating the complexities of the sport to seek guidance from seasoned jumpers. Mentorship provides valuable support, helping each other develop skills and gain confidence.

Skydiving Traditions

The skydiving culture has been around for a while and has developed fun traditions. Safety is taken very seriously in our sport, but we tend not to take ourselves too seriously. We like to think up many fun and humorous things to do while skydiving. From freefall “fights” with pool noodles, and riding inflatables out of the airplane, to putting together a Mr. Potato Head freefall – we find many ways to keep things interesting while in freefall (and maybe even try to set a new, silly record).

  • The forehead stamp is one of the most monumental traditions that welcomes newly licensed skydivers into our community. Becoming a skydiver ain’t easy – you work hard to complete and pass 25 jumps, develop freefall skills, learn to pack a parachute and pass an oral and written exam. Once your United States Parachute Association (USPA) A License Proficiency Card is complete, you’ll receive the official USPA A license stamp on your forehead – crowning your grand achievement! This is a signature experience that highlights you the whole day, surrounded by other licensed skydivers within the community, cheering you on.

  • Milestone jumps – like your 100th, 200th, or 1,000th jump – are all celebrated in a big way. All of the skydivers on the dropzone make it a huge deal to pull off your dream milestone jump. Whether you want to jump in cow onesies, do a wingsuit rodeo, or just want to jump with as many friends as possible – a skydiver will drop everything to make your dream come true! As tradition, the skydiver will get a pie in the face after their jump is over (when they least expect it, of course). Getting pied can be a messy experience, but we all wear it as a badge of honor!

  • The pre-jump handshake is something that is shared amongst all skydivers whether it is your first tandem skydive or your 1,000th skydive. Before exiting the airplane, each jumper will give a pre-exit handshake to those around them. Most skydivers have developed some type of pre-jump handshake with their friends but the traditional slap and dap is our go-to. This is a way to show love to everyone who has chosen to go on this adventure together. So get ready to give your fellow jumps a high-five followed by a fist bump before you jump out!

  • The beer line is house – or dropzone – rules for anyone who dares to cross an invisible line designated in the landing area while under canopy. One of the most known traditions at the dropzone is to end a great day of jumping by grabbing a cold one from the communal beer fridge with your buddies. How does the beer fridge stay stocked? Well, some jumpers bring beer to celebrate milestone achievements, or as a ‘thank you’ to the instructors, but some have a debt to pay for passing the beer line (or no-go zone). If you cross the line, you’ll hear a triumphant “BEER!” amongst all of the skydivers who caught you! It’s a little teasing in good taste, of course – but if you get caught passing the beer line, we expect you to bring the good stuff.

Want to be a part of the skydiving community? It all starts with your first jump – book your tandem skydive with Start Skydiving and join our awesome community! Blue skies.

Thanks to the exhilarating, eye-catching, and awe-inspiring qualities of skydiving, it’s a popular activity that is on just about everyone’s bucket list. Many thrill-seekers dream of soaring through the skies totally free, with only a parachute rig on their backs and the wind in their hair. Bliss!

Your first time skydiving experience is super important. It can set the bar for not only a life-changing, one-and-done experience, but it also could potentially open the door to a whole new world and become a new-found hobby that totally takes over your life (in the best way possible)! If you’re ready to turn your dreams into reality, you might be wondering what is the difference between solo and tandem skydiving, and which you should start with? It’s a question we hear often, and we’ve got answers for you right here!

What is Tandem Skydiving?

Tandem skydiving is the most popular choice for first-time jumpers. Why? Because on a tandem jump, you are securely harnessed to a certified, skydiving professional who is in charge of controlling the jump from exit to landing. Your job on the tandem skydive? Relax, enjoy, and be sure to listen closely to whatever instructions are given by your assigned tandem instructor. Easy day!

Tandem skydiving is designed to allow you (the tandem student) to enjoy the experience of skydiving without the added pressure of operating skydiving equipment, landing a parachute, or performing emergency procedures (if necessary). Phew!

How Tandem Jumps Work

Before making a jump, you’ll participate in a brief training session during which the instructor will explain the process. The brief will include proper body position for exit and freefall, what to expect during freefall, what signals to know, and landing techniques.

When it’s your turn to go, you and your instructor will board the airplane together. The instructor will connect the special harness system that securely attaches you together inside the airplane. The instructor takes charge of the entire jump, including deploying the parachute and ensuring a successful landing.

Benefits of Tandem Skydiving

1. Safety

With an experienced instructor managing the skydive while using dropzone-owned and maintained gear, the inherent risk of jumping out of a plane is minimized significantly. Your instructor handles all technical aspects, allowing you to enjoy the experience without worry. We’ll touch on skydiving safety again in a minute.

2. Easy for Beginners

To take on a tandem skydive, training is minimal – making skydiving accessible for beginners and those without any prior skydiving experience.

3. Quick & Exciting

Tandem skydives provide a rapid introduction to skydiving, with the opportunity to experience free fall and parachuting on your very first jump without any other commitments. Come. Jump. Leave. OR stay!! We love to hang out with our guests. Besides, there’s plenty of other things to do at our facility – like indoor climbing!

What is Solo Skydiving?

Solo skydiving is specifically taught through the Accelerated Free Fall (AFF) program. The AFF skydiving program offers a scaffolded and comprehensive learning experience for those interested in achieving a skydiving license or just wanting to operate the parachute themselves!

A solo skydiving student exits the aircraft keeping his eyes directed toward the front of the plane

Steps Before Your First Solo Jump

Solo skydiving requires much more preparation and training than a tandem jump – five to eight hours more to be exact. The AFF program starts with the First Jump Course (FJC), where you will learn everything you need to perform a successful skydive all by yourself!

After the FJC, you will complete your first Category A jump (with two AFF instructors by your side) from 10,000 to 12,000 feet, and your first solo parachute flight from 5,500 feet! From there, you can decide to continue through the AFF program through a series of jumps of different skills in order to receive the first of four skydiving licenses issued by the United States Parachute Association (USPA): the A license.

Challenges & Rewards of Solo Skydiving

1. Training & Certification

How many tandem jumps before solo skydive? The answer depends on the dropzone where you’re jumping. At Start Skydiving, it is not mandatory to first make a tandem skydive before enrolling in the Start Skydiving Jump Institute, but it is highly recommended as it is a great introduction to the sport of skydiving before making the commitment to go solo.

How many jumps before solo? Getting your USPA A license requires extensive training and certification through a total of 25 jumps. While you could just go through the FJC and only complete the Category A jump, it might not necessarily feel like a solo skydive because your instructors are holding onto you during freefall.

2. Independence

Jumping solo means you are responsible for all aspects of the jump, from exiting the aircraft to deploying and landing the parachute.

3. Rewarding Experience

Successfully completing a solo jump offers a significant sense of achievement, the freedom to skydive independently in the future, and access to our phenomenal, international skydiving community.

Solo vs Tandem

Safety Comparison

The USPA has tracked skydiving safety statistics since the 60s. Tandem and solo skydiving have become increasingly more sophisticated over the last several decades, and both have impressive safety statistics – especially compared to other extreme sports.

Is tandem skydiving safer than solo? Well, if we look at the statistics, yes. Over the past decade, tandem skydiving has seen an average of one student fatality per 500,000 jumps. In 2023, there were zero tandem skydiving fatalities in the United States. Solo skydiving has a fatality rate of 0.27 per 100,000 jumps (1 in 370,000).

Improvements in safety statistics over time have everything to do with standardization and ongoing improvements in training, advancements in skydiving gear and technology, and an industry-wide focus on safety. Tandem instructors hold a USPA D license (the highest license level attainable), have at least three years in the sport, have completed a minimum of 500 skydives, and have completed rigorous coursework and exam requirements.

Cost Implications

There are, of course, major price differences in skydiving once or twice versus learning how to skydive on your own! At Start Skydiving, a tandem skydive experience starts at $239, while the First Jump Course (ground school and first jump) is $359. The entire AFF program costs upwards of $4,315

Here’s the great news … once you are a licensed skydiver, you just buy “lift tickets” to altitude, which are around $30 a pop! Big difference.

A smiling female AFF student in a blue jumpsuit stands between AFF Instructors John Hart III and Alex Hart

Time Commitment

Tandem skydiving offers immediate gratification, with only a short training session before your jump. Solo skydiving, on the other hand, demands a significant time investment for training before your first jump and even longer (about a month or more) for earning A license certification.

When choosing between tandem and solo skydiving, consider your own comfort level, the required time and financial investment, and assess your long-term goals. Whether you opt for the ease of a tandem jump or go for the independence of a solo skydive, the sky’s the limit for your next adventure!

Ready to take the next step? Book your AFF First Jump Course or tandem skydive today! And if you have any questions at all, visit or contact Start Skydiving. Blue skies, friends!

For many people, bucket lists are composed of several “maybe one day” ideas. Oftentimes, the barriers to checking off those items are time, resources, and good old-fashioned courage. Well, skydiving doesn’t take long and fortune favors the bold, so let’s look at the costs associated with skydiving.

How much is a skydive exactly? There isn’t a black-and-white answer; it depends on several variables. It’s important to understand the financial aspects involved before you push the boundaries of your limits and take that leap into a world of sensory amazement. Let’s get into it!

How Much Does it Cost to Skydive?

For first-time skydivers, the cost typically ranges from $200 to $400 for a jump depending on many different factors. For starters, the dropzone you choose to jump from plays a significant role in determining the cost of your jump. Popular tourist destinations or metropolitan areas might have a slightly higher price range compared to more remote locations. Not to mention, dropzones with larger aircraft and higher altitudes often come with higher price tags, reflecting the increased fuel and operational costs.

The type of jump you choose can impact the cost of skydiving as well. Tandem jumps tend to be more affordable for beginners, whereas student skydivers can spend about 13 times the cost of a tandem to complete the 25 jumps needed to become an A-licensed skydiver certified by the United States Parachute Association (USPA).

How Much Does Skydiving Cost in OH?

The cost of skydiving in Ohio is in line with prices elsewhere – it ranges from $209 to $400, depending on your jump choice. At Start Skydiving, we price our tandem jumps competitively and guarantee to offer way more than just a jump out of an airplane. We are extremely passionate about sharing and providing the transformational experience of skydiving to all who are able – in a way that is sure to leave a long-lasting impression. Here are the prices at Start Skydiving for tandems, discounts, group rates, media packages and add-ons:

Why is Skydiving So Expensive?

We can understand the sticker shock at first glance, but when you consider everything that goes into the cost of skydiving, it’ll all start to make sense. Not only are you getting the experience of a lifetime, but you’ll be greeted with open arms at our family-owned and operated dropzone that boasts top-notch customer service, unique facilities, and a perfect reputation. Here’s a glimpse of what goes into the price of a tandem skydive:

  • Ticket to Ride

At a bare minimum, we must first consider the costs that go into a simple airplane flight. This includes fuel, airplane cost, airplane maintenance, and any other overhead costs like pilot and ground crew compensation.

Psst! If the flight up is of interest to you – and you’re not wanting to jump out of a “perfectly good” airplane or you’re not quite 18 years old yet – we offer the opportunity to ride shotgun on the way up and down (rather than flying your way down)! A VIP co-pilot flight for participants 12 years and older is $69.99!

  • Skydiving Equipment

Skydiving gear is literally built to save lives which is why it can be so costly. A typical skydiving parachute system is equipped with a main parachute, a backup reserve parachute, a pilot chute, a reserve static line (RSL), and an automatic activation device (AAD) all packed within a durable container. The gear is meticulously packed and maintained by certified professional parachute riggers who know the ins and outs of skydiving equipment.

  • Professional Instruction

Regardless of the stereotype, skydiving instructors are not crazed adrenaline junkies looking to live life on the edge. They are dedicated professionals who take their passion for skydiving and safety VERY seriously. To become a USPA-certified tandem instructor (like those on our team), a skydiver must have at least three years of experience, a minimum of 500 jumps, pass several exams, achieve a USPA D license (the highest level of licensure possible), and go through rigorous training. All skydivers at Start Skydiving receive professional training and instruction from our diligent and passionate instructors before, during, and after their jump.

  • Freefall

Altitude matters when it comes to the freefall portion of skydiving. Altitude is set by the dropzone and is determined by aircraft type, cloud cover, and FAA restrictions. Here at Start Skydiving, we offer jumps at 14,000 feet with an option to go all the way up to 17,000 feet!

  • Parachute Ride

The parachute jump cost must include a parachute ride, right? How else do you make it back down to the ground as safely as possible!? The parachute ride is a whole different experience from the adventure of skydiving. Your instructor will steer the canopy for a five-minute scenic ride back down to the dropzone – and if the opportunity presents itself, you might even get a chance to take the toggles!

  • Optional Add-Ons

If you want to make your skydive even more memorable, you may want to add a photo and video package to capture footage of your epic experience from start to finish. It may be tough to fork over more dough after paying for a tandem skydive but, trust and believe, it’s money well spent!

Is Skydiving Worth the Money?

Skydiving isn’t just about the jump, the thrill, or even the ever-so-popular adrenaline rush – it’s about empowerment, pushing past your boundaries, discovering your true strength, and appreciating the beauty of life. Settling for nothing but the absolute best is what sets your skydive apart from mediocre and really gives you the full effect of what you’re about to experience. We understand the impact that jumping from an airplane can have on people – just look at us – it’s changed all of our lives forever in such a powerful way!

Not only is skydiving worth the money, but it’s worth the challenge – conquering your fears and altering your life for the better is simply priceless. Grab your wallet and run (don’t walk!) to book your skydiving adventure with Start Skydiving today! Blue skies.

In the world of team-building activities, there’s one activity that stands head and shoulders above the rest: skydiving! Imagine you and your team making the leap of a lifetime TOGETHER in a heart-pounding, adrenaline-pumping journey guaranteed to inspire collaboration and enrich a sense of camaraderie!

What are the Benefits of Team Building?

Team-building activities – especially those unique team-building ideas – have a way of strengthening the bonds between team members in a way that can’t be achieved in a typical office setting. Corporate team-building activities can improve communication, build trust, motivate, boost productivity, and promote overall team morale. So, not only is it better for your employees but your business will benefit too!

Is Skydiving a Good Team Building Activity?

Abso-freakin’-lutely! If you’re looking for unique team building ideas, skydiving takes the cake. Skydiving isn’t just good; it’s extraordinary. Jumping from an airplane challenges teams to push beyond their limits and conquer their fears together; fostering trust, camaraderie, and a shared sense of accomplishment. Unlike mundane team building activities, skydiving propels teams into the unknown, where they are pushed to be vulnerable and discover new strengths, and build unbreakable bonds – all amidst the thrill of freefall!

Why Skydiving is the Ultimate Team Building Activity

Skydiving has a way of stripping individuals of all the hats they wear in the office and bringing everyone back into their equal, human form. It’s a shift in perspective that opens your eyes to the idea that, at the end of the day, we’re all just people on this planet; we’re all in this together. Just imagine being able to high-five your CEO after you both just jumped out of a perfectly good airplane together!

1. Skydiving Forges Indestructible Bonds

Skydiving is one of the most powerful trust-building activities one can participate in even if you’re riding solo, and especially with a group. Diving into the unknown, together as a team, creates a bond that withstands any challenge. As individuals confront their fears side by side, trust is not just built – it is fortified. From the moment you book the skydive, you can watch the support between colleagues grow as they motivate and cheer each other on. Communication, reliance, and encouragement become second nature as teammates lift each other up, which fosters a sense of unity that continues long after each parachute lands.

2. The Adrenaline Surge: Igniting Team Spirit

As hearts race and pulses quicken, barriers dissolve, and teammates become unified in their shared experiences. The adrenaline rush of skydiving isn’t just an individual experience; it is a catalyst for team spirit and collaboration. The rush of wind against each of their faces with breathtaking views from thousands of feet in the air has a way of creating a sense of awe and wonder that inspires and binds the team together. Shared adrenaline activities fuel a sense of camaraderie that carries over into the workplace, inspiring creativity, supplying positive energy, and bolstering a culture of collaboration.

3. Skydiving Enhances Communication & Leadership Skills

Skydiving not only builds character for each team member on an individual basis, but it also enhances overall team communication and leadership skills. Skydiving challenges participants to communicate effectively all while under pressure. Navigating these challenges together, develops a deeper understanding of each other’s strengths and weaknesses, laying the groundwork for more efficient teamwork in the workplace all while keeping a “no one left behind” mentality. Will you be the one to stand out and encourage your teammates?

4. Skydiving Creates Unforgettable Memories

From the awe-inspiring views to the rush of jumping into the big blue abyss, every moment is forever engraved into the collective memory of the team. Not only will this moment represent a darn good time in your life together, but it will also become a part of the team’s identity, giving each person a sense of belonging that extends beyond the excitement of bracing the skies together. Whether reminiscing about who was the most nervous before the jump or who had the best skydive selfie, these memories will bind each person together forever.

5. Celebrating Shared Achievements

Skydiving isn’t just about the jump itself; it’s also about the overwhelming sense of accomplishment that comes with conquering the skies. From the nervous excitement of gearing up, to the adrenaline-fueled freefall and the triumphant parachute landing – each moment is a testament to teamwork and perseverance. As colleagues come together after the jump, they bond over their shared achievement of overcoming fears together. These accomplishments become the foundation of a strong team culture, providing a sense of togetherness and mutual respect that spreads amongst the entire company.

6. Booking Your Unique Corporate Event at Start Skydiving is Easy!

If you book a corporate team building event at Start Skydiving, you’ll get A LOT more than just a skydive. Just like there are additional requirements to learn how to become a wingsuit skydiver, there are specific prerequisites to learn how to become a BASE jumper. And once you have completed both, you can combine the two for the ultimate adventure and extreme sport! But first, let’s figure out what is required to become a BASE jumper and talk about the differences between skydiving vs BASE jumping.

What is BASE Jumping?

BASE jumping is an activity that is similar to skydiving in the sense that you use a parachute to land – except instead of jumping out of an aircraft, the BASE jumper jumps from objects. You may be surprised to find out that – just like ‘SCUBA’ – ‘BASE’ is an acronym. BASE stands for:

  • Building
  • Antenna (tower)
  • Span (bridge)
  • Earth (cliff)

These are the four primary types of objects a BASE jumper can jump from. In some cases, BASE jumpers will even free solo (or climb) up to the jump site of tall structures or mountains all while carrying all of their BASE jumping equipment – this is called free BASE jumping.

BASE Jumping vs Skydiving

The basics of BASE jumping and skydiving seem pretty similar at first glance – jump, pull a parachute, and land. However, they are different when it comes to the type of equipment used, the exit altitude, and the landing areas – so much so that they are considered entirely different sports.

Would we say that skydiving is better than BASE jumping? Not necessarily. Both sports have their pros and cons and can be enjoyed for a plethora of reasons that are all unique to the individual. Here are the biggest differences between skydiving and BASE jumping:

1. Equipment

In skydiving rigs, there are two parachutes: a main parachute that is deployed initially, and a reserve parachute that is deployed in the case of a main parachute malfunction. Whereas, BASE jumping parachutes are a single-parachute system – which means BASE jumpers do not have a backup parachute. Consequently, the containers for BASE jumping tend to be much smaller in size than a skydiving container.

2. Altitude

Most full-altitude skydives are performed between 8,000 and 14,000 feet, and usually never below 2,000 feet even for highly experienced skydivers. Whereas, BASE jumps can be performed anywhere from 300 to 1,000 feet. These extremely low altitudes are the reason why there isn’t a reserve parachute in the BASE rig – there simply isn’t enough time to perform the necessary emergency procedures to deploy a second, reserve parachute.

3. Landing Area

Dropzones are areas where skydives are performed on the norm, therefore, they usually are equipped with well-manicured lawns free of debris and plenty of space for landing. BASE jumps are usually performed in natural settings with trees, hard surfaces, buildings, and power lines – which are all less-than-ideal landing areas and can be quite hazardous.

4. Safety

The most significant difference between skydiving vs BASE jumping is the safety rating. After reading about the equipment, altitude, and landing area variations, you might be wondering, “Is BASE jumping more dangerous than skydiving?”

According to the United States Parachute Association (USPA), skydiving has a fatality rate of about 1 in every 370,000 jumps – with an even more favorable rate for tandem skydiving, which is about 1 in every 500,000 jumps over a 10-year average. BASE jumping, in contrast, has a fatality rate of about 1 in every 2,300 jumps – making it statistically much more dangerous than skydiving. This is a fact that is understood by the community and by anyone who decides to partake in BASE jumping.

How to Become a BASE Jumper

Do you need to skydive to BASE jump? Yes – many people don’t realize that the path to becoming a BASE jumper begins with becoming a skydiver! Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to become a BASE jumper:

Base Jumper jumping off of a building

1. Do a Tandem Skydive

While some dropzones (like us at Start Skydiving) don’t require a tandem skydive before enrolling in the Start Skydiving Jump Institute, it is highly recommended for several reasons. Jumping out of an airplane can be a bit overwhelming for some, and most people find it difficult to focus and correctly perform all of the necessary tasks that come with completing their first solo jump

Doing a tandem skydive before enrolling in the first jump course, helps knock the additional nerves and stressors that come with skydiving for the first time so that you can focus on remembering everything you learned while on your first solo jump. Besides, you’ll want to be sure you like skydiving (which we think you absolutely will) before you commit to taking the first jump course.

2. Get Your Skydiving License

Getting your skydiving license starts with enrolling in the Start Skydiving Jump Institute and attending the First Jump Course. The duration of the ground school curriculum depends on which dropzone you’re learning at. Start Skydiving’s ground school takes about six to eight hours to complete – which is pretty average.

Once your learn-to-skydive journey begins, you set the pace – it can take anywhere from 7 to 30+ days to complete the Jump Institute program. You must perform at least one skydive every 30 days to stay current, or else you may have to repeat the First Jump Course as well as the previously completed jump category. The duration of the program can be extended due to weather, scheduling conflicts, and finances.

3. Build Jump Numbers & Stay Current

Once you’ve got your skydiving license, the world becomes your oyster! You’ll have the time of your life as you rack up jump numbers with friends and hone in on your skills. Staying current keeps the skills you learned fresh and at the forefront of your mind. Luckily, we are home to one of the best skydiving teams in the nation, Team Fastrax, so you can use their knowledge and coaching to enhance your skills – and they’re happy to do it! We are all a community, passionate about cultivating confident skydivers.

Advanced canopy control skills are essential for successful BASE jumping. So, as you move and progress through your jumps, be sure to practice precision landings, canopy maneuvers, and emergency procedures to navigate different landing environments and build the confidence to handle unexpected situations.

So, how many skydives before BASE? Once you have 200 skydives and are feeling confident, you should be ready to move into BASE jumping. Eep!

4. Complete a BASE Jumping Course

The requirements for attending a BASE jumping course vary depending on which course you sign up for. Most BASE jumping instructors require students to have at least 200 skydives and must be a very current skydiver.

5. Invest in BASE Jumping Equipment

As we’ve said before, BASE jumping requires different equipment than skydiving – so, you’ll want to invest in a BASE-specific rig, parachute, helmet, and anything else you may want or need.

6. Shred

Once you’ve completed the course and have all the necessary gear, you can start BASE jumping with fellow BASE jumpers! BASE jumping requires traveling to different locations that allow for BASE jumping, as it can be illegal in some places (e.g. all of the US National Parks). Most BASE jumpers take organized trips to the Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho where BASE jumping is legal all year round. You’ll also want to attend the largest single-day festival called “Bridge Day” at the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville, WV.

Becoming a BASE jumper requires precision, dedication, and a deep respect for safety. If you’re feeling ready to take on the ultimate risk of BASE jumping, we urge you to speak to skydivers within the community and heed their suggestions.

Feeling ready to embark on the journey of a lifetime? Start your skydiving adventure with Start Skydiving – book your jump today! Blue skies.

As adrenaline-seekers gear up for their next skydiving escapade, there’s one crucial factor often overlooked amidst the excitement and that is the aircraft they’ll be jumping from. From capacity and altitude to exit and comfortability, the skydiving plane you jump from sets the stage for you to have a great skydiving experience. Let’s examine what planes are used for skydiving and why the type of plane you jump from matters!

Types of Skydiving Planes

Most people only have experience flying commercially and assume that they’ll skydive from a passenger plane. You know you won’t be jumping from a Boeing 747, but you might not know that you’ll be skydiving from a one-of-a-kind repurposed aircraft designed specifically for jump operations!

Airplanes for skydiving come in a range of sizes and all have their pros and cons. If you’re skydiving in the United States, you may spot one or more of these skydiving aircraft:

  • Cessna 182
  • Cessna 206
  • Cessna 208 Caravan
  • Twin Otter
  • King Air
  • Beech 99
  • Skyvan
  • Sherpa
  • CASA
  • PAC
  • DHC-4 Caribou

What is the Most Common Skydiving Plane?

One of the most common planes used for skydiving is the Cessna 182 – the backbone of the skydiving industry. Its affordability and accessibility are what attracts most dropzones to this particular skydiving aircraft. The Cessna 182 can carry about four skydivers at a time, creating a more personal and intimate experience, especially for first-time tandem jumpers. Students who are learning to skydive solo also enjoy this aircraft because it helps keep their learning experience more individualized and private, while also limiting distractions from fellow jumpers. Once you become licensed, you may want a faster plane that gives you more altitude so you can have more time to play in the skies.

Cessna 182 Specs:

  • Can reach up to 10,000 feet
  • 20 minute climb to altitude
  • 4 person capacity

Why the Type of Plane You Jump From Matters

Exit Altitude

One of the biggest contributing factors to the epicness of your skydive is the altitude from which you jump. Why? Because higher altitude means more freefall time – woohoo! How high planes fly for skydiving all depends on the aircraft being used and what kind of engine it is equipped with. Skydiving airplanes equipped with turbine engines can usually reach 14,000 feet or more, while smaller planes like the Cessna 182, can reach around 10,000 feet. However, height isn’t everything when it comes to skydiving – most people are perfectly happy with jumping from 8,000 to 10,000 feet (or any height, really!).

Capacity

One of the primary considerations when selecting a skydiving airplane is its capacity. Larger skydiving planes can accommodate more jumpers per load, allowing for bigger group jumps and more efficient tandem and solo skydives. Not only does this mean more room to jump with friends, but also less time spent on the ground waiting around for your turn! More jumps? Yes, please!

Speed

Speed is another critical factor to consider when weighing the pros and cons of each aircraft. Faster planes reduce the time it takes to climb up to the desired altitude, decreasing wait time and giving you more opportunities to jump several times within a day (if you want), or simply cutting down the wait time and getting straight to the best part!

Exit Door

The design of the aircraft exit door plays a significant role in the ease and safety of skydiving operations. Spacious doors facilitate smoother exits, reducing the risk of accidents, and ensuring a more comfortable transition from the plane to freefall – whether you are a first-time tandem jumper or an experienced skydiver exiting solo or with friends. Some exit doors, such as the CASA, are big enough that you can just walk straight out! A well-designed exit door with considerations of the wing and strut placements enhances the overall enjoyment and comfortability of the skydiving experience.

What Type of Aircraft Does Start Skydiving Use?

While the Cessna 182 is the most commonly used plane for skydiving operations, larger planes like the Caravan are often preferred for their enhanced capacity and amenities. At Start Skydiving, we are proud to have not one but two Cessna Caravans and a Cessna 206! We believe in having the best of the best for our guests, which is why all of our airplanes are maintained to the highest standard with customized upgrades to get you up to altitude as quickly as possible.

Meet our powerful fleet:

“Patriot One” – Cessna 208B Caravan

  • Capacity: 14 skydivers
  • Altitude: 14,000 feet

We like to call Patriot One the “flagship of our fleet” because she is equipped with the latest in avionics and can fly cross country. She can be seen participating in regular humanitarian missions carrying wounded warriors and their families across America and performing demonstration jumps.

“Lady Liberty” – Cessna 208 Grand Caravan

  • Capacity: 18 skydivers
  • Altitude: 14,000 feet

Lady Liberty is also capable of flying cross country and has also flown on several humanitarian missions, including delivering medical supplies to Haiti. Climbs to jump altitude in Lady Liberty are just under 12 minutes as she is equipped with a Blackhawk CP140-powered turbine engine.

“Freedom” – Cessna 206

  • Capacity: 5 skydivers
  • Altitude: 10,000 feet

Freedom is also capable of flying cross country, is commonly used on demonstration jumps, and has flown over multiple NASCAR, NFL, and MLB events.

Are you ready to jump out of the best Cessna for skydiving? Our Cessnas are ready for you! Book your skydive with Start Skydiving today! Blue skies.

Skydiving is not merely about the jump and landing; it is an extraordinary adventure that encompasses a multitude of elements – ensuring a truly exceptional experience.

The magic of skydiving all falls on the skydiving center you choose to make your jump with. Don’t just settle for the cheapest option; prioritize safety first and foremost while also considering the presence of skydiving passion pulsing through the heart of the dropzone. The importance of factors such as professionalism, top-notch aircraft, and welcoming facilities cannot be overlooked when it comes to creating a successful and enjoyable skydiving journey.

Let’s take a closer look at what it takes to make a great skydiving experience for any kind of jumper, whether you are a first-timer, a student, or an avid skydiver.

1. A Highly Professional and Passionate Team

Central to every great skydive is the presence of a passionate team whose goal is to give you the best experience possible. At Start Skydiving, our certified instructors go beyond just guiding our guests; we set the stage for a memorable and life-changing jump into the skies of limitless possibilities.

Our instructors’ commitment to safety and customer service is unmatched, which fosters an environment where jumpers (you!) feel not only excited about jumping out of a perfectly good airplane but also comfortable, confident, and empowered about the adventure ahead. You can fully embrace the thrill of skydiving with the peace of mind that you’re in great hands.

The personal touch provided by our instructors is what sets us apart from the rest. Their passion for our sport enhances the overall experience, creating connection and strengthening trust. Each jump is a meaningful and transformative journey because you’re guided by someone who genuinely loves what they do and sincerely cares about you.

2. A Specific Focus on Safety

Safety starts at the aircraft and skydiving equipment used for jumping. After all, there’s no skydiving without either one! At Start Skydiving, doubts are don’ts – meaning if we doubt the viability of any of our gear and equipment, we don’t jump it. Period.

We treat our Cessna Caravans like precious gems. Each aircraft is meticulously maintained by onsite rated mechanics who diligently inspect and attend to each aircraft to ensure it is ready for flight.

All of our skydiving gear is inspected and maintained by FAA-certified parachute riggers to ensure each line and piece of fabric is in pristine condition for jumpers to rely on. Our hard-working parachute packers are dedicated to ensuring each pack job is packed with precision and care.

Every member of our team – on the ground and in the sky – considers the safety of all individuals involved with every decision that is made at the dropzone. Each of our highly-trained instructors is diligent in practicing learned emergency procedures so that they will respond calmly and appropriately should there be a situation in the air.

Not only do we follow strict guidelines laid out by the United States Parachute Association (USPA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), we also hold ourselves accountable by keeping our mission and values at the top of our minds at all times.

3. An Impressive Fleet of Aircraft & Altitude

The choice of aircraft plays a pivotal role in making a skydiving experience extra special. Our carefully kept fleet of Cessna Caravans offer spacious cabins, quick climbs to altitude, and security. They not only provide a smooth ascend, they also provide the capability to achieve higher altitudes than normal.

When it comes to altitude, size matters, and at Start Skydiving we typically jump around 14,000 feet – that’s higher than most dropzones! We even offer the option to jump from an even higher altitude of 17,000 feet on specific days (usually the third weekend of each month). Higher altitudes means more freefall time which means more thrill! Woohoo!

4. A Welcoming Atmosphere with Comfortable Facilities

A great skydiving experience begins well before the actual jump, and Start Skydiving understands the importance of comfortable facilities. Our dropzone offers a welcoming environment and well-equipped amenities to accommodate special events or to help ease pre-jump jitters, making waiting for your turn an enjoyable part of the experience.

From comfortable seating areas to fantastic facilities that cater to the needs of both fun jumpers and first-timers, we ensure every aspect of the journey is enjoyable. Skydivers have access to spacious training spaces where skydivers can brief their jumps and first-timers can expect to receive comprehensive pre-jump training to help them prepare mentally and physically.

The dropzone’s inclusive and community-focused environment extends to the spectator areas where friends and family will be allowed to participate in the excitement and share the joy of the jump. With our well-manicured green spaces, picnic tables, nearby park, and on-site high ropes course and climbing wall – our dropzone is much more than a place for airplanes to take off and land.

5. A Remarkable Reputation

Each dropzone has a story of how they came about and what they represent. At Start Skydiving, we are a family-owned and operated business. We pride ourselves on providing the very best experience.

Customer service is our top priority here at Start Skydiving and it shows in our more than 5,000 awesome reviews on Google, TripAdvisor and Facebook! This knack of providing superior customer service combined with our stellar aircraft and fantastic amenities is what has earned us the 2022 Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award and title of #1 Dropzone in the World on www.dropzone.com.

6. A Harmonious Blend for the Ultimate Experience

At Start Skydiving, we are steadfast in our commitments to professionalism, customer service, our culture of safety, and our pursuit of fun in order to provide a skydiving experience of the highest caliber. We’re proud of what we’ve created, and we will continue to nurture our unique blend of excellence.

In the world of skydiving, Start Skydiving stands out because what we offer goes way beyond the ordinary. A good skydiving experience involves jumping out of an airplane, but a great skydiving experience involves first-class facilities, best of the best equipment, meticulously-maintained aircraft, and people who pour love and passion into everything they do.

If you’re ready for a phenomenal skydiving experience, choose Start Skydiving and book your jump today! Blue skies!

There’s no such thing as “safe skydiving” – it’s an inherently high-risk activity, after all – but we can absolutely prioritize safety in skydiving. Not surprisingly, making safety front and center in an environment that involves aircraft, speciality equipment, and highly-credentialed people is a costly endeavor … which is why choosing the cheapest option for skydiving is not necessarily the best or safest decision.

Just like you wouldn’t want to choose the cheapest medical care option for heart surgery, you shouldn’t skimp on skydiving either – both require a great deal of trust, extensive training, proven expertise, and the highest degree of quality in order to ensure a successful experience with safety in mind at all times. Here are our reasons why skydiving safety should be your top criteria, not skydiving price.

Understand the True Cost of Safety in Skydiving

For skydiving to be a fun and exciting adventure, a culture of safety is non-negotiable. The cost of ensuring a fun and successful jump involves many factors that we simply cannot compromise on. From top-notch equipment and well-maintained aircraft to highly-rated and experienced instructors, each facet of the business contributes to the overall safety of a professional skydiving operation. Here are all of the factors that contribute to the costs associated with skydiving:

1. The High Cost of Cutting-Edge Equipment

Quality equipment is the backbone of skydiving safety. State-of-the-art parachute systems, harnesses, and other safety gear are essential in a successful skydiving experience. At Start Skydiving, we ensure that all of our safety equipment meets the highest industry standards. If we doubt the viability of any of our equipment, we don’t jump it.

The expenses involved in acquiring and maintaining this life-saving equipment are significant. Routine inspections and wear and tear repairs are performed by FAA-certified parachute riggers who ensure all gear is up-to-date. This means that there are ongoing costs to keeping each parachute system and its container in optimal condition.

Additionally, the back-up reserve parachutes must be inspected and repacked for each skydiving rig every 180 days by FAA-certified parachute riggers to ensure proper operation in case of an emergency. Investing in modern, reliable gear is necessary for prioritizing the safety of our jumpers. It costs a pretty penny, but we are willing to pay for it. Period.

2. Aircraft: The Lifeline of Skydiving

Flying well-maintained, modern aircraft – like our Cessna Grand Caravans – is absolutely crucial for a safe flight. The Grand Caravan is one of the most reliable airplanes in the skydiving biz and boasts a spacious cabin for extra comfort (and room for more friends) while you make your ascent towards the clouds.

As you may imagine, aircraft are expensive to purchase and maintain. Operational costs include frequent airworthiness inspections, thorough examinations, preventative maintenance, and performance test flights. All expensive but necessary line items to ensure optimal performance and overall safety of each flight.
Each airplane part and inspection performed must comply with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and any other authority’s procedures and the manufacturer’s current instructions and standards. Start Skydiving’s choice of the Grand Caravan reflects our commitment to safety, reliability, and the comfort and trust of our jumpers.

3. The Value of Expert Instructors

Our instructors are the heart and soul of our dropzone. They bring passion, knowledge, professionalism, and comfort to our guests. Becoming a certified skydiving instructor is not an easy feat, it requires rigorous training and experience. This is why providing fair compensation is crucial to attracting and retaining the best talent, a shared value in safety, and quality of instruction. By paying instructors a livable wage, Start Skydiving invests in the expertise necessary for an enjoyable experience while keeping safety at the forefront of our minds.

Our well-maintained hangars, training areas, and equipment storage showcases our commitment to providing the best experience for our guests. We are recognized for having some of the nicest facilities in the country – once you step foot in our home, you’ll see why. Prepare to be wowed!

At Start Skydiving, we pride ourselves on making everyone feel welcomed into our family. We provide comfortable waiting areas for our guests, an on-site high ropes course and climbing wall for friends and family to enjoy as they cheer you on from the ground, and entertainment for all.

Our landing area and green spaces are meticulously maintained to give our first-timers, students, and licensed skydivers a cushy landing experience free of potentially harmful debris.

The Reality of Budget Skydiving Centers

Budget skydiving centers may be an attractive option for those wanting to stay frugal, however, this may indicate the prevalence of outdated equipment and aircraft – posing risks to jumpers and spectators. Plus, a cheaper option may not be as it appears; read the fine print for hidden costs and fees. You don’t want to start what should be one of the most best days of your life with surprises that lead to a less than satisfactory experience, or worse, a less safe experience. Safety should never be compromised, especially when it comes to engaging in an act as serious as skydiving.
